Alanis Morissette calls out male musicians as she accepts Icon Award at Billboard Women in Music

Alanis Morissette recalls working with sleazy male musicians as she accepts Icon Award at Billboard Women in Music honors in LA: ‘It was challenging’

Alanis Morissette has long been considered a musical icon since her breakout in the early ’90s.

Her seminal 1995 album Jagged Little Pill has even inspired a recent Broadway musical of the same name.

She was presented Thursday with the Icon Award at the Billboard Women in Music honors in Los Angeles.

The award was presented by Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins, who toured with Morissette, 45, in the mid ’90s.

She took the stage in a formal taupe duster, which she paired with a black dress with matching stilettos.

The You Oughta Know artist reflected on how she was treated by male musicians early in her career.

She said: ‘It was challenging, because it was like, if there was not going to be any sex or any kind of romantic interaction, then they didn’t know what to do with me. So they ignored me offstage.’

Supportive husband: But one man earned her thanks, as she mentioned her mouth was dry, and her husband Mario 'Souleye' Treadway brought a bottle of water to the stage: 'None of this is possible without support, specifically from my partner'

Morissette continued: ‘I just had a baby… like 10 minutes ago. So, I have to acknowledge my husband because I could not do what I’m doing and be able to unschool and have the amazing family that we have together without you. None of this is possible without support, specifically from my partner.’

She also recalled the struggle of being shoved into different boxes during her career: ‘I was loved and ignored, and adored and hated, then I was considered really hip, and then totally irrelevant, and then totally relevant again, and then I was considered a boss and a podcaster.’

‘These roles, these archetypes, are within all of us — all the women in the room here.’

Morisette ended on a hopeful note: ‘I’m just really happy that this is a time where young women performers can do all things without being shamed for who they are.

‘We can dress any way we want, we can speak any way we want. We’ve always been able to, but now we do it without public shaming to some degree.’
